Plot
Half-Life 2 occurs around twenty years after the event that occurred at the Black Mesa Research Facility in the first game, where the scientists opened an unintentional portal into an unfriendly dimension, Xen. The game starts with Gordon Freeman being awoken from stasis by the mysterious G-Manwich; reveals it was his involvement in the Black Mesa incident that attracted the attention of a multidimensional powerhouse known as the Combine that ruled Earth within seven hours. The Combine has established an amoral security state by integrating humans biologically and other species. The G-Man can insert Gordon inside a car arriving in City 17, the site of the Combine Citadel in which Dr. Wallace Breen, the former Black Mesa administrator who negotiated Earth’s surrender, governs as the puppet leader of the Combine.
After escaping The Combine Forces, Gordon joins a resistance that is led by the former Black Mesa scientist Dr. Eli Vance, which also includes his daughter Alyx as well as the former Black Mesa security guard Barney Calhoun who is employed undercover as an undercover Civil Protection officer, and another Black Mesa scientist, Dr. Isaac Kleiner. After a failed attempt connects to the resistance base, Black Mesa East, in Kleiner’s improvised research lab, Gordon walks through the city’s canals. He acquires the aid of an aircraft and fights through the sewers and rivers.
Then, at Black Mesa East, Gordon is introduced to Eli and meets another resistance scientist Dr. Judith Mossman. Alyx Introduces Gordon to her robotic pet, Dog, and presents him with his gravity gun, a device that can be used to manipulate large objects. If it is discovered that the facility has been attacked by Combine troops, Eli and Mossman are taken prisoner and sent for detention at the Combine detention facility Nova Prospekt. Alyx separates the two, Gordon detours through the town infested with zombies, and Ravenholm with the help of its one remaining survivor, Father Grigori. After escaping from the area, Gordon discovers a resistance outpost. Gordon uses a custom Dune buggy to navigate the coastal road that is crumbling to Nova Prospekt and fight off the alien antlions, as well as help the resistance fight off Combine attacks.
Gordon can break through Nova Prospekt and reunites with Alyx. They find Eli; however, they discover that Mossman has been a Combine informant. Before they can prevent her from doing so, Mossman teleports herself and Eli back to City 17’s Citadel. It is the Combine teleporter that explodes shortly following Gordon and Alyx making use of it for escape from Nova Prospekt.
After returning to Kleiner’s laboratory, Gordon and Alyx learn that the teleporter has malfunctioned and that it has been over a week. When they are not there, the resistance has been mobilized to fight the Combine. With assistance from Dog and Barney, Gordon fights his way into the Citadel. A security device accidentally overcharges Gordon’s gravity gun and allows Gordon to battle to climb the Citadel.
Gordon is snatched in the Combine transporter and transported to Breen’s office, in which Gordon as well as Mossman, are waiting along with Eli as well as Alyx in confinement. Breen discusses his plans to defeat humanity using the Combine and reveals that he is not in line with the information he gave Mossman. [22 In anger, Mossman frees Gordon and Alyx along with Eli before Breen can teleport them away from the world. Breen is trying to escape using an escape teleporter. However, Gordon destroyed the reactor using energy orbs shot through a gravity gun, which kills Breen. As the reactor is about to explode, the G-Man returns and freezes the time. He lauds Gordon’s work and makes mention of Gordon’s “services” before putting Gordon back in stasis.
