Private universities were established in Bangladesh after the 1992 Private University Act was passed. This Act was amended in 1998. Private universities operate under the 2010 private university Act. There are currently 103 private universities in operation across the country.

1. North-South University of Bangladesh

North South University (NUS), was founded in 1992 in Bashundhara. It is located in Dhaka 1229 and Bangladesh. It was the first private university established in Dhaka (Bangladesh). This university was approved by the government of Bangladesh under the 1992 private University Act. It is a private higher education institution located in Bangladesh.

2. BRAC University (BRACU)

BRAC University (BRACU) is a residential non-government university in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was founded by Bangladeshi Social BRAC University (BRACU), was established under the 1992 private university act. Sir Fazle Hashed Abed founded BRACU in 2001 as an educational concern for the BRAC organization.

It is based on the liberal arts approach to education, which fosters new ideas and provides new energy in the field tertiary education. It provides a high-quality education and strives to meet contemporary needs. BRAC University offers merit- and performance-based scholarships to its students. The current campus of BRAC University is located in Mohakhali (Dhaka) and the permanent campus at Merul Badda, which covers 5 acres.

3. East West University (EWU)

East-West University Bangladesh, a private university located in Dhaka (Bangladesh) is the name of this university. It is one the oldest private universities of Bangladesh. East-West University was founded in 1996 as an independent non-profit institution. The East-West University permanent campus can be found in Aftabnagar Rampura, Dhaka near Bangladesh Television. 

It covers 7.4 bighas. With modern facilities, the total area of the nine-storied university complex covers 4,58,957.04 sq. feet. The University's Vice-Chancellor is Prof M. M. 4. Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB)

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), is one of Bangladesh's oldest, most prestigious and best private universities. Its permanent campus is located in Bashundhara R/A, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Private University Act 1992 established the university in 1993. The Vice-Chancellor is Dr. M Omar Rahman.

In 1995, the Dhaka Ahsania Mission founded Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology. It works closely with the University Grants Commission, Bangladesh and many other National and International Education Institutions and Professional organizations. The University's permanent campus was built on 5-bighas (1.6 acre) of land in Tejgaon Industrial Area, which is located in the heart Dhaka City.

6. American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB)

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) is an accredited and renowned private university located at Banani in Dhaka, Bangladesh founded by Dr. Anwarul Abedin. The university is an independent institution with its own Board of Trustees. AIUB has made great strides since 1994 when it began its journey.

7. Daffodil International University (DIU):

Daffodil International University, is an independent private school that is located within Dhanmondi, Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was founded on January 24, 2002, pursuant to the Private University Act, 1992. The university was founded in 2002 following the approval from the University Grants Commission (Bangladesh) as well as the Bangladesh Government's Ministry of Education. There are multiple campuses in Dhaka.

8.United International University (UIU):

United International University (UIU) is a private institution located within Dhaka, Bangladesh, The government of Bangladesh authorized the establishment of United International University in 2003 under the Private University Act -1992 (now replaced by the 2010 ACT). Financial assistance came from the United Group, a Bangladeshi business conglomerate. There are two campuses at the University in Dhaka and Dhanmondi, Dhaka.

10.University of Asia Pacific (UAP)

University of Asia Pacific (UAP) was established in the year 1996 as a private college pursuant to the Private University Act 1992, with the intention of expanding the possibilities of higher learning in Bangladesh. The UAP curriculum was approved by the University Grants Commission of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
